Tony George out as Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss
By Dale Jewett | 06/30/09, 5:10 pm et
Tony George will no longer have day-to-day responsibility for running his family businesses, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Current chief financial officer Jeffrey Belskus is the new CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corp., and current chief legal counsel W. Curtis Brighton is the new president and CEO of Hulman & Co. The changes, made public Tuesday, take effect July 1.
George remains on the board of directors of the Hulman-George companies, along with his mother and three sisters. But he will focus on running his IndyCar Series team, Vision Racing.
The changes come one month after the family denied reports that George had been ousted from his executive positions during the annual meeting. But the family issued a statement that said George had been asked to...

But that plan crashed when the price of gas plummeted. Now, Hyundai is ready to give that marketing spiff another spin. Starting Wednesday, the Korean automaker will tout a plan that guarantees buyers gas at a $1.49 a gallon ...

There was little doubt that Shelby would call it a day following the completion of the 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500. After all, 540 hp just might not cut it for some Shelby faithful. Recently, cars such as the Mini Cooper have done much to chip away at that perception, but eons of crap are hard to overcome. Think infamous, such as...

Max Mosley says an agreement has been reached with the Formula One Teams Association and that the threat of a breakaway series has been averted.
The surprise news came after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday, where FOTA chairman Luca di Montezemolo was expected to state his case.
At Silverstone last weekend, an agreement in the short term seemed unlikely, but clearly some discussions took place over the past two days.

The redesigned 2010 Ford Taurus is bigger and more luxurious....

Test Drive: 2010 Mazda3 hatchback punches it up

Today's question:
Q: We need to get a full-size SUV. It's down to Expedition, Infiniti QX56 and Sequoia. I tow, but not usually over 7,000 lbs., so they can all do that. Which would you go with?
A: The Expedition (and similar Lincoln Navigator), Sequoia and Nissan Armada (mechanically similar to the Infiniti), get "recommended" ratings from Consumer Reports. Oddly, the Infiniti QX doesn't. I prefer the look and driving feel of the Sequoia, but I've seen other pretty negative reviews, so perhaps I'm in the minority there.

Game Over? FOTA Announces Formation of Breakaway "Formula One" Championship

Camaro, Mustang, Challenger set for modern pony-car war
Forty summers ago was a magical time for performance-car enthusiasts--specifically for fans of high-horsepower pony cars. The summer of 1969 broke with Detroit in a high-octane horsepower war among the Big Three automakers. With the carmakers trying to outmuscle one another, the winners were the...

Peugeot driver Stephane Sarrazin on Thursday equaled sports-car legend Jacky Ickx's record of three consecutive Le Mans 24 Hours pole positions. Sarrazin took the pole from Audi driver Allan McNish in the closing minutes of qualifying on Thursday night. Sarazin's best time of 3 minutes, 22.888...

Having two personalities is not normally desirable, but for the Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic, it works. Grand-touring cars, by their nature, lead double lives, packing in enough performance to satisfy demanding drivers while being practical enough for every day. This latest iteration of the...

The new Forte replaces the Kia Spectra compact sedan for 2010. Kia's biggest seller gets new skin and a wider, longer version of the Hyundai Elantra platform but falls short in simple things such as the workings of shifters and clutches. Still, it's only $14,390 to start, and that includes...

Honda is 50 years old today, and much of its early success is the result of a series of brave, bold decisions acted upon by smart engineers-turned-executives. That and dumb luck. But we'll get to the dumb luck later. First, the boldness. Bold decisions are one thing, but that alone would not ...

The future Suzuki sedan appears well on its way to arriving at U.S. dealerships later this year, and spy shooters have again caught it during testing. Today's question:
Q: Was Daimler the reason for the demise of Chrysler? I know Xler was always a spunky 3rd in sales and quality, but was alway first w/ innovative products. Is Fiat deal deja vu all over again?
A: I don't think Daimler ruined Xler, but I doubt it did the company much good. I think the seeds of Xler's problems already were sown -- quality issues among them -- before the Germans got there. I'm uncertain if Fiat's just Bad Marriage, Part II, of if the supposed synergies and nice-driving small cars will materialize. Sure hope so. Hate to see the demise of the Hemi/minivan/Jeep/Challenger company.
