FIASCO: Confusion couldn't come at a worse time
Today's question:
Q: Requirements for my next vehicle are all wheel drive, comfort/ luxury and decent mileage. Any luxury AWD car or small SUV in the works in the next year or so that is hybrid or diesel?
A:: The German brands are about to become major hybrid purveyors. BMW has two, X5 and X6, coming late this year and early next. Audi Q5 hybrid could show up as early as '11. Now that Honda's ditched its U.S. diesel plans, it's scrambling to have some high mpg SUVs and will use hybrid tech to do that. Details and timing uncertain though.

The Legend Returns: Schumacher back in Formula One as Massa's replacement
07/29/09, 1:58 pm et
After several days of speculation, Ferrari announced on Wednesday that seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher will indeed replace the injured Felipe Massa in next month's European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain.
An announcement on Ferrari's Web site said that Schumacher, 40, will begin training immediately to make sure he is in shape for his comeback and that he is ready to go. Schumacher suffered some injuries during the winter after crashing a racing motorcycle, and the team needs to be sure he is fit. Regardless, the news comes as a strange contradiction to what the 40-year-old German's manager, Willi Weber, told the Daily Mail in comments published Tuesday. Webber said that he was "200 percent" sure that Schumacher would not fill the vacant seat. However,...

BMW has stunned the motorsports world by announcing its intention to pull out of Formula One racing at the end of 2009. The Ferrari 458 Italia is to make its public debut in Frankfurt in September....
Ferrari has drawn from the visual spirit of the Enzo to create a power-packed replacement for the F430 that shuns the rounded curves of its past V8s in favor of chiseled, unmistakable aggression. Boasting a new 4.5-liter V8 engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a 202-mph top speed, Ferrari has revealed that the car--code-named F142 and long rumored to be named the F450--will be called...

Ferrari's Felipe Massa to undergo surgery after crash at Hungarian Grand Prix

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa will require surgery after sustaining head injuries during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday.
He suffered a concussion, bone damage to his skull and a cut on his forehead. He will have surgery and remain in intensive care. He was conscious when he was taken to the hospital, and his general condition is stable, Ferrari said.
Massa crashed after striking what appeared to be a spring that had fallen off the Brawn of Rubens Barrichello. Massa ran across the grass on the entry to the corner and then went across a run-off area on the exit with the brakes on--but with the throttle also open, which prevented him from slowing down.
The Ferrari struck a four-layer tire wall with such force that it caused the barrier behind it to bend....

Q: Have you changed your mind in favoring the Fusion Hybrid over the new Prius?
A:: Prius shows that Toyota finally matched Ford's hybrid drivetrain smoothness, so that's not the issue it was when I wrote about the Fusion. And the Prius gets better mpg, which is a key reason for buying a hybrid, of course. But behind the wheel? Fusion's still more pleasant to drive, in my view. So, which one is better depends on what attribute you value most highly.

Race Drivers Allegedly Fall Victim to Ponzi Scheme From Within
By Steven Cole Smith | 07/23/09, 8:16 pm et
Grand-Am Rolex Series drivers Henri Zogaib and Ryan Dalziel were on top of the world. They had finished second a few weeks earlier in the Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway, and then, on May 18, 2008, they won the Rumbum.com 250 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. It was the first win for the duo, the first-ever win for the journeyman Samax Motorsports Dinan Riley-BMW driver.
Typical of inexperienced but wealthy gentlemen Grand-Am drivers, Zogaib, 36, qualified and drove the first 14 laps, leaving professional Dalziel, 27, to drive the rest of the 98-lap race. “Ryan was pure magic. I'm very proud of him,” Zogaib said. “I'm a happy man.”
Well, not for long. And neither were some of Zogaib's associates, including Dalziel. Earlier this year, he...

They appear to be getting friendlier, these Germans. When I lived here 25 years ago the saying, "The customer is always right!" was never used. The 2010 Range Rover might look the same, but there are so many changes under the skin that it's as if Land Rover jacked up the body and slid a new car underneath. The exterior changes are subtle. Review: Audi Q5 SUV drives like a dream; controls absurd

Today's question:
Q: I'm shopping for a new car and after having two Accords back to back, I'm looking for something different. I'm leaning towards the Volkswagen CC, but am concerned about its reliability. I plan to look at the Acura TSX but am afraid it is too similar to the Accord.
A: I doubt you'd find the TSX pushes any of your Accord buttons, VERY different car. Haven't reviewed CC yet. CC is a version of Passat, mechanically speaking, and Passat's reliability score, at least in Consumer Reports, is below average. You're right to be wary.
